Sustainable gardening is about adopting a way of gardening that minimises the negative impacts of gardening on the environment and maximises the positive.
Gardens can use large amounts of water
Two-thirds of Victoria's environmental weeds have originated from domestic gardens
Large volumes of garden waste is dumped in landfill each year
Garden fertilisers and chemicals can be washed into our waterways, potentially causing algal blooms and killing native flora and fauna
Garden products may be sourced from non-renewable resources adding to pressure on our native forests and rivers

If you want advice about which plants are the most environmentally-friendly or what is the most efficient watering system to install your accredited Green Gardener can help. The Green Gardeners accredited training program recognises the important role landscapers and nurseries can play in educating the community about sustainable gardening practices.
The accredited training program is designed to provide practical skills and knowledge to participants to enable them to give accurate and consistent advice to their clients. It is anticipated that accredited Green Gardeners will directly contribute to a significant reduction in water and chemical use around the home as well as contribute to an increase in the use of indigenous plants, mulch, compost and renewable resources.
